MoveOn Announces "Obama in 30 Seconds" Contest

I guess it's MoveOn day here at techPres. The giant e-group has just reached into its 2004 playbook and announced an "Obama in 30 Seconds" contest for video makers. The reason? "The race isn't over, and we've got to pull out all the stops to help him across the finish line," the group says. "Every day, political insiders and pundits tell Americans what to think about the presidential race. But now, it's YOUR turn to take the megaphone. We want to run ads that are of the people, by the people, and for the people. So consider making an ad."

Here's how it will work: Anyone can design a 30 second ad about Obama between now and April 1, the public will vote on them, and a panel of judges will pick a winner from among the finalists, to be announced April 17--in time for the Pennsylvania primary. (The judges include Adrian Grenier, Jesse Jackson, Matt Damon, Larry Lessig, Donna Edwards, Naomi Wolf, and Markos Moulitsas. Only 6 women out of 23?) One cool new touch: the group has thrown up a bulletin board to enable people to collaborate with each other.

The winner will get $20,000 worth of video and editing equipment and MoveOn will air their ad nationally. Says MoveOn Political Action's Adam Green, "We hope this helps some up-and-coming video editor get national exposure, and gives them the editing tools they need to do even bigger, bolder stuff."
