The Return of Hillary's "Conversation"

Today North Carolinian airwaves were hit with a new ad from Hillary Clinton. This one doesn't try to scare the bejeezus out of you with creepy stories of late-night mortgage crises. No, this ad heralds the return of Hillary's "conversation," the same conversation that she initially promised to have with the American people at the start of her campaign. Unfortunately, it appears to be the kind of one-sided exchange we've come to expect from the Clinton campaign.

Take a look:

This is a revival of the Ask Hillary series in which supporters sent in questions and a staffer was filmed reading them to Hillary on a bus. It was about 50% participatory.

This case appears to be no different. As with her previous promise of a dialogue with voters, Clinton encourages you to go to her website -- specifically, a new subsite titled "North Carolina Asks Hillary" -- to initiate the conversation. Once there, voters are presented with a form and the directive to "Ask Your Question":

conversation

It's a one-way street, this form. You think long and hard about your question, type it up, hit "submit," and poof!, it's gone. No one sees it but Hillary and her staff, and they probably won't respond unless it's friendly. Not sure where the conversation is in that...

The Clinton campaign continues to confuse the assertion of a conversation with an actual back-and-forth dialogue. To paraphrase Radiohead's Thom Yorke, just cause you say "conversation," doesn't mean it's there.

Hillary promises to respond to the submitted questions every week -- we'll be looking out to see if there are any surprises.
