Political Videos Weekly Roundup

8. Youth Voters Want Solutions. The national chairman of the College Republicans wants young conservatives to submit videos to YouTube for the CNN/YouTube debate. He wants to know how the next president will move away “from five-year band-aids and move towards thirty-year solutions.” So far only 120 views on YouTube — will Republicans galvanize youth support like the Democrats, particularly Barack Obama (see below) are doing?

7. Katie Couric repeats Bush talking points. MoveOn.org holds Couric’s feet to the fire, compiling clips of her in Iraq, talking to Bush officials, the President himself, and General Petraeus. Almost 70,000 views on YouTube.

6. Glenn Greenwald: Stop the DC Establishment. Salon blogger extraordinaire Glenn Greenwald takes on Washington’s reaction to Gen. Petraeus’ testimony. Over 15,00 views on YouTube.

5. Ron Paul Brings People Together. This week’s entry from the Ron Paul wing of the net stars a young African-American woman who started a Ron Paul Meetup group in South Carolina, comes from a military family, questions Obama’s support for expanding the army, and shows that Paul’s opposition to the war on drugs could draw support from blacks, who are disproportionately imprisoned as a result. That is, if they ever hear of Ron Paul. OVer 36,000 views on YouTube.

4. We the Who? YouTube user (and Larry David dopplegänger) “citizenslacker” identifies citizen apathy as “the true root cause of our dysfunctional democracy. And it’s dangerous as hell.” OVer 6,000 apathetic citizens have tuned in to watch.

3. On the Road: Fred in Cedar Rapids. A video from the Thompson campaign meant to show Thompson’s sense of humor and disarming nature, it also hints at the continuing sense that Fred’s too, er, comfortable to run a national campaign. Only 923 views on YouTube (but more on Thompson's channel on blip.tv.

2. Bush vs. Zombies. Look out, they’re after our brains! President Bush sees a new threat on the horizon. Not new, but absolutely hilarious (if you like to make fun of the Decider). Over 680,000 views on YouTube.

1. Students for Barack Obama. This video was made by the campaign, but it very effectively showcases the enthusiastic support Obama is generating among young people, and it also subtly ties that campaign to the long history of youth movements in American politics for causes like civil rights and ending the war in Vietnam. Don’t miss the footage of Obama boogieing to some chants from a group of organizers. This will be shown in Denver in 08 if he’s the nominee, no question. Over 21,000 views on YouTube.
