I heartily second the thinking that there's a real risk that these efforts to pull people into the governing process are all for show. But I think we have to remember that as much as Barack Obama has been planning his presidency since grade school, we're still incredibly early in the very tough process of getting a presidential administration up and running. I suspect that one hand of the transition doesn't always know what the other hand is doing, so that one cell of staffers might be pushing for participation, and only then using the resulting avalanche of interest to push internally for making use of it. It certainly wouldn't be the first time politics (or corporate politics, for that matter) worked that way. In short, signs that participation is being ignored are learning opportunities, for sure, but I think it's a mistake to react to them as if they're some sort of decision from on high.

One of the first things that the Obama administration need doing is to expedite amendment to the Paperwork Reduction Act. Clearance from the OMB is an impediment that should be removed unceremoniously.

The provisions in The Right to Information Act(India)could be used as a rough guide.

Like everyone else, I think this a great step toward transparency and the opening up of government. But for me, the real test will be whether these comments (there are now more than 3,300 on the post Micah mentioned) actually influence the Obama team's decision-making process. And without a specific reference to how comments have been taken into account, it will be hard to know what kind of influence they've had.

What worries me is that this kind of forum can be simply used to create the impression of participation, rather than foster the real thing.

This is a commendable first step and a great example that can encourage the unfamiliar to embrace the power of participant media, but I just wanted to weigh in with my concern about these discussions being carried out in one centralized location. Rather, shouldn't we be promoting the inclusion of the many highly knowledgeable and influential communities that have already been gathering online and vetting these specific ideas (e.g. Slashdot)? Why reinvent the wheel? On the other hand, I'd love to see Congress itself open up in this way.

The success of Obama's campaign was in acting as a hub from which campaign workers could launch, not function as the network.

So many people just use logos they find on the internet without caring about any copyright law. When it comes to politics there have been fliers made up with a party's logo payed and printed by another party, used to discredit the image of the first party.

I'd be most interested to see if the input of the community changes any policy.

That's the way to really show that Obama is going to go in a new direction, rather than placate us with tools that allow us to mouth off and impact nothing.

Parsing your post, it appears to me that you want to give Phil recognition as an individual activist while trying to discredit Brown as a paid hack.

If your standard is separation from the campaign, then fine. By that standard, even if Brown is a professional filmmaker, he's still "grassroots" and "user-generated". Otherwise, you have to site Phil as a professional operative and Vote Different as a professional effort.

He may not have been working on the Obama account (which I never said he was), but he was still, at the time of the video, working for a political consulting firm. By your standard, he still made it as a professional, not as an individual.

You can't have it both ways.

I quoted Phil because his point of view is of interest and relevant. I'd have quoted you too on this had I heard back from you before I posted this. As it turns out Michael Brown IS a professional filmmaker with years of experience, AND it also appears he is independent of the campaign. More details coming as soon as I can write them up--I just got off the phone with Brown.
As for Phil's connections to the Obama campaign, he has said and others confirmed that he was not working on the Obama account for Blue State Digital when he made the Hillary 1984 video, that he made it on his own time on the weekend, and, if you remember, he was fired immediately after he was exposed as the video's maker.

Phil de Vellis, who made the "Vote Different" Hillary 1984 video mashup that was the viral political breakout of 2007, says, "The video appears to be professionally produced. It's not a high-end production, but definitely made by a professional for an established political interest group.

I'm sorry, is this the same Phil de Vellis whose "user-generated, grassroots video" Vote Different was made while he was a full-time employee of Barack Obama's web firm? And we're to take his word on what constitutes a user-generated video on what grounds?

I think you're letting your partisanship get in the way of your objective reporting. It's one thing to question who made the piece, and whether they were paid.

To quote a Democratic operative - who was working as a Democratic operative at the time he made his magnum opus - who (with no knowledge or factual basis) claims it is not grassroots, is simply laughable.

Let's see, the video is one unbroken shot with the guy looking off to the side half the time, and it includes the incredibly professional effect of a fade-to-black. Yup! No way that could have been done by an amateur.

Let's stick to factual reporting, not partisan staging. Deal?
