I would say it was campaign generated content and not voter generated content that produced that video.

Micah, thank you for this post about what we have done at linkfluence. Actually, we have studied other meme spreading phenomena where the viral effect is stronger, with some conversation leaders that really spur the debate in their respective communities before said debate follows the routes underpinned by links to spread from one website to its neighbors. We'll be unveiling those very shortly on http://linkfluence.net/en/news
De Vellis Was Still No "Grassroots Activist"

Parsing your post, it appears to me that you want to give Phil recognition as an individual activist while trying to discredit Brown as a paid hack.

If your standard is separation from the campaign, then fine. By that standard, even if Brown is a professional filmmaker, he's still "grassroots" and "user-generated". Otherwise, you have to site Phil as a professional operative and Vote Different as a professional effort.

He may not have been working on the Obama account (which I never said he was), but he was still, at the time of the video, working for a political consulting firm. By your standard, he still made it as a professional, not as an individual.

You can't have it both ways.

It was made by a pro, details coming

Mike--
I quoted Phil because his point of view is of interest and relevant. I'd have quoted you too on this had I heard back from you before I posted this. As it turns out Michael Brown IS a professional filmmaker with years of experience, AND it also appears he is independent of the campaign. More details coming as soon as I can write them up--I just got off the phone with Brown.
As for Phil's connections to the Obama campaign, he has said and others confirmed that he was not working on the Obama account for Blue State Digital when he made the Hillary 1984 video, that he made it on his own time on the weekend, and, if you remember, he was fired immediately after he was exposed as the video's maker.
Come on, seriously?

Phil de Vellis, who made the "Vote Different" Hillary 1984 video mashup that was the viral political breakout of 2007, says, "The video appears to be professionally produced. It's not a high-end production, but definitely made by a professional for an established political interest group.

I'm sorry, is this the same Phil de Vellis whose "user-generated, grassroots video" Vote Different was made while he was a full-time employee of Barack Obama's web firm? And we're to take his word on what constitutes a user-generated video on what grounds?

I think you're letting your partisanship get in the way of your objective reporting. It's one thing to question who made the piece, and whether they were paid.

To quote a Democratic operative - who was working as a Democratic operative at the time he made his magnum opus - who (with no knowledge or factual basis) claims it is not grassroots, is simply laughable.

Let's see, the video is one unbroken shot with the guy looking off to the side half the time, and it includes the incredibly professional effect of a fade-to-black. Yup! No way that could have been done by an amateur.

Let's stick to factual reporting, not partisan staging. Deal?

but I'm 20 and all of my friends LOVED the "Hillary and the Band" video. We thought it was hilarious. Even my Obama supporting friends, most of whom halfway through would turn to me and say "She wasn't really in a band, was she?"

On the flip side, most of us didn't get the "Yes We Can" video. It seems kind of stupid, lost somewhere between song and spoken word.

lesson's value is not so much for "us," but for the campaigns

The smart campaign will love an opportunity like this, will in fact have trained for it assiduously. "How will we react when someone tosses us a curveball? When we're criticized, or when someone with a cam and a Mac remixes our 'brand' into something far, far away from our intent?"

The electorate knows to pay little or no attention when candidates are able to stick to the script. And they spring to alertness when ever an unexpected, unscripted out-of-left-field moment arises. They want to see the real person; they want to see what happens when a candidate (and a campaign) has to improvise.

Moments like these are a huge chance to be authentic, to show faith that your constituents will also get the difference between authorized and unauthorized views, to show belief that it takes all kinds (within obvious bounds) and that the candidate will take people as they come).

From what I've read about Obama, he's got the chops to handle things like this in perfect key. And if so, the electorate will say, "Ah, Obama-san, your social-media kung fu is very strong."

Turk - Did y'all ever put the Bush re-election commercial about gas taxes up on YouTube? It used a grainy film filter...

I realize YouTube wasn't born then, but wondering if it made it up after the fact?

How funny, I just posted to my blog this morning on a similar topic. I'd love to see someone take the Budweiser frogs ad and have them saying, "Mitt-Rom-Ney" while looking at a Mitt Romney sign... It's simple, catchy and retro...

As for the whiteboard, I really liked this one.
