Great videos and I agree on how collecting peoples reactions and comments on important subjects and can really show a politicians true colors, be it on legalizing marijuana, health care iraq etc. Youtube is full of videos all we need now is someone or many people to go through them and create highlight reals. Narconon Vista Bay

McCainism

Excellent post. The reason McCain is going so far is he has made a point of exploiting the media. Such tactics have generated a lot of media coverage for him. The result: NAME RECOGNITION. People don't have to know much about McCain to have some idea who he is and where he has been. Now who the heck names their kid "Mitt"?

But what about the investment?

Great post. Another point to add is how this money is spent. Mark Walsh of MediaPost writes of a new study soon to be released by Borrell Associates that examines 2008 online political advertising. From Walsh's story:

(T)he tiny .5% share of political advertising going to the Internet is well below the 9% chunk Borrell estimates the medium gets of ad dollars overall. It garners at least 5% in all other ad categories, including automotive, travel and health.

This is crazy, especially considering how efficient the social web is for promoting a political idea...

More of my musings...

Patrick,

Great stuff. I would suggest you watch Huck's online numbers through Monday for further confirmation of some of your ideas.

Couple of stats:
After the SC vote we raised $1.1 million in six days.

So far after Florida, we have raised $400,000+ and are working towards an additional $1,000,000 by midnight on Monday.

While these numbers pale in comparison to Obama's January haul and Ron Paul's 4th quarter results, Huck's online fundraising has truly fueled his campaign.

Our fourth quarter FEC report shows $6.6 million, $5 million of which we pulled in online.

Candidates use of Spanish on their Web sites

We took a look at how the candidates were using Spanish on the Web to reach the Latino Voter. The result = not very well, which is suprising given the emphasis on the Latino voter as we approach Super Tuesday. You can find our analysis on my blog here:

I've gotten numerous unsolicited e-mails from Giuliani's campaign with NO opt out option. I got another one today. They are required by LAW to have an opt out option, as per CAN SPAM. Don't know why they would not do this, but someone should make a stink about it. The only reason they got my e-mail is because I sent them a message a year or so ago that was far from supportive of Mr. Giuliani. Why they would choose to then add me to their spam list is a mystery.

Sure, someone like the man you mention might have 30 more years worth of experience in the technology sector, but why hire a technologist for a presidents job instead of a politician for a president's job?

Does Obama know much about "tech"? Well, maybe not.. but that's why he hires people under him that do. I must mention though that he is doing a MUCH better job of getting grassroots Barack Obama supporters online to help him gain exposure to America. He is dominating virtually every social network and is(next to Ron Paul) crushing the old school politicians whom TRULY know "Absolutely nothing" about tech.

Remember, web-savvy does not come natural to the Republican Party. We want to see ROI before we build and invest. The classic Catch-22.

My guess is that Ron Paul's "Remember, Remember the Fifth of November" had quite an impact in small, important circles in several GOP campaigns.

Just sayin'.

This is an impressive site and it's good to see that Rudy's campaign is opening up its web space after failing to embrace it at first.

But we're a month away from the first primaries - is it too late for a project this big to even matter? I can't help but think that the Giuliani campaign has had their eye on November 08 for this product. And I know from first-hand experience the dangers of working on a pres campaign and planning past the primaries before the first vote is cast. (See: Dean)

The reason they won't report this is because Zogby has a historically bad track record in their polls. Plus, the blind bio poll is meaningless. Last time I voted, which was a couple weeks ago, the only thing I saw on the ballot were names, and the details of a ballot issue that didn't even count because the proponents didn't gather enough signatures after a bunch were ruled invalid. When most people go to vote, all they'll see is a name, party affiliation, and if they are lucky, a one word description of their occupation (it varies from state to state).

Giuliani Loses to Ron Paul in recent Zogby Poll

Here is an excerpt from Zogby.com Nov. 22:
"The blind bio question was also posed to a larger pool of 1,009 likely voters nationwide, including Democrats and independents, and Paul was the big winner among that universe of voters, winning 33%, compared to 19% for Giuliani, 15% for Romney, and 13% for Thompson."

"...The telephone survey, known as a “blind bio” poll because likely voters are given details of the candidates’ resumes without their names attached."

Will the media report this?

Getting to the bottom of this

After quickly reviewing Giuliani's last four emails, it looks like the problem Michael described occurred with the three "On the air:" messages, where the unsubscribe link was exactly the same as the joinrudy2008.com link in the footer. So that definitely was just a template error as Colin surmised.

The newest message from today, "Happy Thanksgiving", did have the correct link to the Lyris unsubscribe page (it makes you click on another button to confirm) as Patrick stated. I clicked on it, confirmed, and got a confirmation email. So we'll see if I get truly unsubscribed, but due to being hosted by Lyris I see no reason as to why that wouldn't work correctly.

Giuliani's emails have been pretty good technically, unlike those from Fred Thompson's staff, who continue to compose their email in Microsoft Word/Outlook 2007 even after this little tift.

A couple of things.

I think a little bit more context is necessary - I apologize for not providing more in the initial post.

First, the person who first discovered this problem has repeatedly tried to unsubscribe from Giuliani's emails without success - both through that unsubscribe link, by replying to the emails, and by calling the offices - to no avail. She is still on the list.

Second, just because you see a Lyris link doesn't mean that you're going to where you're supposed to go. All email marketing applications - from lyrics to Convio to Constant Contact - offer clickthrough tracking for links in emails. The links are tracked by changing all of the URLs you make in a message to first hit a page set up by the company that tracks how many hits the page has, and then forwards you on to the actual page.

So even though it looks like a normal link an email, it's actually just tracking the clicks without doing what it's supposed to do. You can check this out with any of the candidates - all links on Joe Biden's emails first go to a Get Active page (http://ga3.org..., etc.), for example, before forwarding on to Biden's website.

I think Colin's correct that this is a problem with the email template that has to be corrected, and not a malicious plot by the Giuliani campaign to trap email recipients forever. It is disconcerting that it is not a more obvious process to get out of the email list.
