McCain Cuts off Head of Web Team
By Joshua Levy, 07/03/2007 - 5:18pm

I've just learned that Christian Ferry, the head of John McCain's internet team, has been laid off by the campaign due to McCain's poor second-quarter fundraising numbers.

This is a real blow to McCain's online operation. He launched a site earlier this year that was far more robust than his Republican rivals', which included -- for better or worse -- lots of video and flash and a social networking section called McCainSpace that had been problematic since it first launched. The site was redesigned a few months later, perhaps as a response to some peoples' complaints that the black and white-palette was a little too "Darth Vader" for their tastes.

In an event, this is a real blow to the campaign. What will their web operation consist of now?

I don't think "problematic

I don't think "problematic since it first launched" is at all a fair description of McCainSpace as it would imply that the system didn't work. McCainSpace worked very well for the goals the campaign wanted it to accomplish. Could it have done more? Certainly. Will it eventual do more? That was always the hope, as I discussed with David when we launched the first website; but I certainly don't know anymore!

Your commentators criticism of the system have more to do with what they would have like to see it do. In an ideal world, that is great, but campaigns don't operate in the ideal world. There are always competing interests and resource/time limitations.

Right!

You are entirely correct Christian. I would have enjoyed it if McCainSpace had more interactive features - however there was never a problem in the functionality in my experiences.

The website is still among the finest in this election. The author skews and fails to understand the most basic principles of reviewing.

With all the Respect,
