This Ron Paul thing just keeps blowing up. In anticipation of Paul’s appearance tonight on Real Time with Bill Maher, his supporters have organized a rally in Los Angeles for 6:30 this evening, demanding Paul's appearance using Eventful, the nifty online tool that lets people “create grassroots campaigns to demand that desired events happen.” Jed Sundwall, writing on the Eventful blog, says this is the first time a candidate has organized an event solely using Eventful (our chart showing the number of Eventful demands shows that Paul has led Republicans in demands since mid-March).
This is significant not only because Paul, and Paul’s supporters, is using yet another social app, rather than his own site, to generate support for his campaign, but also because this may be the first time that his online popularity has led to an actual offline event. Paul may or may not be this cycle’s Republican Howard Dean, but he’s found his mojo with his anti-war stance and his candidacy is clearly moving on up because of it. And Eventful may or may not be the Meetup of 2008 (though Meetup is still going strong), but can it help Paul translate his online enthusiasm offline? Most people have equated his popularity online with his libertarian roots, which resonate with libertarian-techie types, but how will other conservatives respond?
And check out the interview David All and Jerome Armstrong of DomeNation did with Paul. You know he’s hit it big now that DomeNation snagged him.
